On Site Leaded Light Repairs

Traditional lead glass windows are made up of separate pieces of glass held together with H section lead and soldered on the joints. Over a long period of time the joints can weaken and lead to movement in the lead which can cause cracks or breakages. Equally wear & tear or accidents can cause breakage.

In these cases leaded light repairs are possible in situ but can sometimes look unsightly. This is because to replace glass on site the lead has to be folded back in order to change the broken piece (with new) and then folded back over the glass. The process stretches the lead and creates a rippled effect, sometimes even destroying the lead.

Much also depends on the condition of the lead in situ. If hard or brittle then the repairs are more difficult and unsightly, if it is soft then a repair can usually be done quickly and without any evidence of a repair.

At Tec Glass we are committed to preserving our heritage - whether we are repairing an existing window on site or proposing full window restoration. Usually our customers prefer to retain as much of the original glass as possible and that is something we are very proud to support - giving you the benefit of advice based on 25 years of experience in this traditional craft.
